Bere Island lies off the coast of West Cork, guarding the mouth of Bantry Bay. It is a place of fierce beauty and quiet power — a place that does not shout for attention, but holds your gaze all the same.
Rerrin is the island’s principal village: the old naval base, the harbour, the heart of it. It is the place this whiskey is named for.
Bere Island has always stood guard — first for empires, now for memory. Four Martello towers were raised across its hills, completed by 1805 and among the earliest built in Ireland: relics of British watchfulness, thrown up in fear of an invasion that never came.
Two still stand, at Ardagh and Cloughland. A third once occupied the ground now known as Rerrin Redoubt. Their cannons have long fallen silent. The towers remain — watching, enduring, reminding.
Every stone and tide tells the same truth: resilience is the island’s oldest craft.
The name Lonehort is a corruption of Longphort: Norse for a fortified ship harbour. A survey in 1985 found what the Norsemen left behind — a breakwater built by dumping quarried stone on the seabed to break the swell, and the outline of a naust, a boat shelter, on the shore.
In June 1602 an English force of three thousand landed on that same ground before the Siege of Dunboy. In 1898 the Admiralty cut a gun battery into it.
Every power that came to this coast wanted the same harbour, for the same reason.
A beacon tower was raised on Ardnakinna, the island’s western point, in 1850. It stood dark for over a century, minded by a caretaker, marking the harbour mouth without ever showing a light.
On 23 November 1965 it was finally lit.
Born of isolation. Perfected by time. If you have seen our label, you have seen this tower.
On Bere Island, craft was never a luxury. Boats were built when the sea demanded it. Nets were mended in winter by the fire’s light. Fields were made stone by stone, by hands that didn’t hide from work.
Here you learned to fix, to make, to endure. That is the island’s inheritance — and the standard we hold ourselves to.
